Poky Pedaling Potluck Picnics typically occur monthly from May to August. They always meet at Goerke Park near the entrance to the swimming pool. Plan to show up at 5:15 PM, since we’ll start riding at 5:30 PM.
We’ll ride between 3 to 5 miles to a mystery park location where we’ll socialize and dine on a potluck picnic. We ride to a different park on every ride.
Poky Pedaling Potluck Picnics are free, as are all Poky Pedaling Stevens Point rides. We will ride slowly as a group, staying on calm streets and non-motorized paths and obeying all traffic laws. All Poky Pedalers are welcome.
Since it is a potluck, please bring a food or drink contribution to share. Please do not bring beer, wine, or other alcohol – all Poky Pedaling Potluck Picnics are alcohol-free.
Poky Pedaling Stevens Point will bring plates, utensils, and cups for Poky Pedalers to use, but you are encouraged to bring your own.
If you feel uncertain about what food to bring, you are welcome to be as fancy or as plain as you choose. The culinary experts may want to bring some sort of creative homemade salad or main dish or dessert. But if cooking isn’t your thing or you just don’t have the time, simply bring a bag of cherry tomatoes or carrots or almonds or potato chips or cookies. Or a jar of pickles or some crackers and dip. Or a bottle of juice or soda. You can even order a pizza beforehand and strap it onto your rear rack. Whatever you bring will work and will be appreciated just the same.
Once our potluck is complete, Poky Pedaling Stevens Point will ride back to Goerke Park with all those who wish to return to our starting location. It could be around dusk while we ride to Goerke Park – although the intent is to return while it is still light out, cloud cover or delay may result in riding back during low-light conditions. Poky Pedalers are encouraged to equip their bicycles with a front light and rear reflector or light to ensure a safe and legal ride back.
Poky Pedaling Stevens Point looks forward to sharing Bike Fun with you!
Minor changes for 2015 PPPP’s
For those who have been on Poky Pedaling Potluck Picnics in past years, I want to mention a couple of minor changes to this year’s PPPP’s.
1) In past years, our routes were planned to always pass a food store in order to enable the purchase of a food contribution on the way to our mystery picnic destination. But for 2015, our routes will not necessarily go by a food store, so Poky Pedalers should plan on bringing their picnic contribution to the start of the PPPP.
Over the past couple of years, there have been almost no requests for the food store stop. By eliminating the food store stop, we get a bit more flexibility in the routes we can take, which increases the number of parks that lie within a 5-mile bike ride of our starting location. Having more mystery park destinations to discover is a good thing.
2) The other change for 2015 involves irregular scheduling of PPPP’s. Because of personal family matters – see this blog post for more on that – I plan to be out-of-town during most of June and again from late August until mid-September. My need to plan around these absences has greatly impacted the entire 2015 Bike Fun Calendar.
In past years, PPPP’s have been held on the 3rd Tuesday of the month. For 2015, PPPP’s will still be on Tuesdays, but not necessarily the 3rd Tuesday. Furthermore, there will be no PPPP in June due to my unavailability.
PPPP’s are planned for May, July, and August, so check the dates on the 2015 Bike Fun Calendar for when they take place.
It is sad that we will have only three PPPP’s this year. Unfortunately, this is one of the tradeoffs I must make. I appreciate the understanding and support that Poky Pedalers provide as I attend to my personal family matters.
On the bright side, there are a record number of Poky Pedals planned for this year. So instead of lamenting the loss of one Poky Pedaling Potluck Picnic, I hope Poky Pedalers can focus on the additional opportunities to share Bike Fun with PPSP throughout 2015.
