Ciclovia WI returns to Stevens Point on Sunday 9/29

A free, fun, community building event for both children and adults takes place in Stevens Point next weekend. On Sunday September 29, Ciclovia WI returns for its second year. Hours for the event are from 11AM to 3PM.

Ciclovia WI is modelled after numerous similar “open streets” events across the country and around the world. The concept is as simple as this: allocate a loop of public streets for a few hours to create a linear park for the community to enjoy.

In the best examples around the country, a loop of streets is closed to motor vehicle traffic for a few hours, similar to what frequently occurs for parades and block parties. That route then becomes a safe place for children and adults to walk, bicycle, rollerskate, skateboard, play, dance, exercise, and more.

Unlike many walking- and biking-oriented events, there is no beginning or end. Participants can show up and leave at any time. People can choose to travel the loop (one or more times) in any direction or they can simply remain near one of the activity zones. As the phrase “linear park” suggests, an open streets event becomes a place for the public to have fun interacting with other members of the community.

The 2013 Ciclovia WI will take place on a 7 mile loop that connects Pfiffner Park, Bukolt Park, Schmeeckle Reserve, and the Sculpture Park. There will be four Active Rest Stops along the route highlighted by food, fun activities, and exhibits by local organizations. Poky Pedalers will enjoy this opportunity to ride among the Active Rest Stops and take part in the fun.

The only street closure on Ciclovia WI will be Crosby St along Pfiffner Park. Otherwise, the route will be open to traffic as usual. Much of it follows The Green Circle, so part of the route is off-street and the rest is on calm streets. There will be volunteers along the route to answer questions and otherwise provide assistance. All participants are encouraged to exercise care and follow all traffic laws during Ciclovia WI.

More information can be found on the Ciclovia WI website here. A map of the route with highlights of the scheduled activities is available here.

Volunteers are still welcome for Ciclovia WI. The website has links and contact info so you can find out how to be a volunteer for this great community building event.

Poky Pedaling Stevens Point will have an info table at Ciclovia WI in Pfiffner Park. On Sunday 9/29, while you are out enjoying Ciclovia WI, stop by and say hi.
