Bike Fun Report: June Poky Pedaling Potluck Picnic

Sixteen Poky Pedalers shared Bike Fun on this evening’s Poky Pedaling Potluck Picnic. Our marvelous evening started under warm sunny skies at Goerke Park. Clouds moved in quickly, which shielded us from the intensity of the sun, yet there was never a threat of rain as we rode to our picnic destination.

We took a route east from Goerke Park and skirted the east side of Schmeeckle Reserve. From there, we headed west on NorthPoint Dr past the SentryWorld golf course. NorthPoint is a great street to ride late in the day due to its bike lanes, its generous overall width, the very low volume of traffic, and the attractive forestland in Schmeeckle Reserve to the south.

Our intended route was to cross Division at the signal in order to head south on Prentice. But we discovered that dusty gravel had just been laid down on NorthPoint west of Division. So instead, we took the crosswalk to the southeast corner (which is a bit tricky since that crosswalk does not have a Walk/Don’t Walk ped-head for some reason) and rode a gravel trail south to the side road east of Division. We continued to avoid most motor vehicle traffic by navigating through lightly used parking lots to the service road in back of K-Mart.

That eventually led us to Isador St, where we headed south to our picnic destination: a sheltered gazebo with picnic benches on the UWSP campus just west of Isador. Because the forecast called for a reasonable chance of rain, it seemed prudent to choose a sheltered destination relatively close to our starting location to keep our picnic dry. Our circuitous route to the gazebo was about 3.5 miles, but the direct route back to Goerke Park is only about 1 mile.

This proved to be a comfortable spot for our picnic. The gazebo sits in a pleasant grassy setting and permits excellent views all around. All Poky Pedalers enjoyed the scrumptious array of picnic contributions. No threat of rain arose, but it was nice to be in a sheltered spot, just in case.

Upon finishing, we packed everything up and rode back to Goerke Park. Another wonderful evening of Bike Fun had come to an end.

Poky Pedalers won’t have to wait long for more Bike Fun because the Poke-Around Ride in the Village of Whiting will take place this Saturday. (The rain date is Sunday, so keep an eye on the weather and the PPSP blog in case a storm blows in on Saturday.) More information is available on the Upcoming Poky Pedal webpage, and the full listing of Bike Fun with PPSP can be found on the 2014 Bike Fun Calendar. I look forward to sharing more Bike Fun with Poky Pedalers this weekend.
